CABG (Heart Bypass)
Also known as Bypass surgery, Coronary artery bypass surgery or Heart bypass surgery; Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a type of surgery that helps to treat people with severe coronary heart disease (CHD). It also helps to improve the blood flow to the heart. This surgery is conducted when plaque which is a a waxy substance builds up inside the coronary arteries and prevents/restricts the flow of oxygen rich blood to the heart.
In most cases, this plaque results in the formation of blood clots that is found in the surface of the coronary arteries. A large blood clot can completely or mostly block blood flow through a coronary artery. Through this surgery a new path is created by grafting a vein bypasses so that the flow of oxygen rich blood is not restricted. The main aim of CABG is to
- Improve the quality of life
- Reduce various CHD symptoms including angina
- Allow a person to lead an active lifestyle
- Improve the functioning of the heart after sustaining damage due to a heart attack
- Lowering/Preventing the risk of another heart attack especially in the case of diabetes
- Improve the survival chances of a patient
